Context#

CIF is released open-source from a CEA / CNRS / UVSQ (LSCE) context. The project needed a license compatible with French law, interoperable with the wider open-source ecosystem, and appropriate for a reusable library / component that other software integrates.

Decision#

CIF is licensed under CeCILL-C.

Consequences#

  • CeCILL-C is a French-law, LGPL-compatible weak-copyleft license authored by CEA / CNRS / Inria. It permits using CIF as a component within larger works while keeping modifications to CIF itself open.

  • This shapes downstream contribution and governance mechanics (DCO / CLA choices) and any future service / commercial structure around CIF.

  • CeCILL-C was chosen accordingly to CEA legal department recommendations and requirements
